How to Decorate a Chic Christmas Tree
Updated: Dec 1, 2020
One of my favorite things to do every Christmas season is decorating a Christmas tree. It is a time-honored tradition in my household and likely yours if you are reading this! The elements that go into decorating a Christmas tree—lights, garland, and ornaments—are familiar to nearly everyone. But when it comes to creating a holiday tree that expresses your style, personality, and surroundings, the options are limitless.
Normally, we opt for more reds, but this year, we decided to add in some blues to create a sophistacted elegant look.
Want to learn how to make it? Follow our 5 easy steps for decorating a Christmas tree like a pro.

Step 1: Hang Your Christmas Tree Lights
The first step in how to decorate a Christmas tree is adding the lights. Tree lights typically come on green or white wire strands. Start at the base of the trunk and work your way up, wrapping lights around every major branch, moving from the trunk to the tip and back. Fluff the branches as you work your way around the tree. If you have a tree that already has lights you can skip onto the next step!
Step 2: Add Christmas Tree Garland or Ribbon
There are no firm rules for decorating a Christmas tree when it comes to draping garland. To avoid branches bulging between tightly cinched garland strands, start at the top of the tree, and slowly increase the amount of garland between each wave as you work your way down the branches. Plan to use about two strands of garland for every vertical foot of tree.
Decorating a Christmas tree with ribbon is a popular alternative to a garland. Loosely wrap wide, patterned ribbon, we use a blue color, around the entire tree in horizontal bands.

Step 3: Add Decorative Gold Natural Elements
Next, place gold decorative leaves on the tree, making sure to hid the stem in the tree. Try to spread them out so it is not so concentrated in one singular area. An easy tip is to placing them in a zig zag down the tree!
Step 4: Add Bows
Next, grab some navy gingham bows and add them to the tree. We recommend having them equally placed apart. If you want to spice it up even more, you can also add in some tan colored bows as well!
Step 5: Hang Christmas Tree Ornaments
The final step in decorating your tree is to hang your Christmas ornaments. Here's what to consider as you're adding Christmas tree decorations. Next, hang your larger ornaments, spacing them evenly around the tree. Ornament balls in one color but several sizes and textures will create continuity from top to bottom. Hang the larger ones on the bottom, the smaller at the top.
